Pasar Ramadan 03

The Muslim normally buka puasa - resume consumption of food and water - by 7.30 in the evening. The Bazaar Ramadan therefore will be very crowded from 4pm - 6pm. However if the stall is popular enough, and when it's weekend, you can expect the crowd to start coming in as early as 3 in the afternoon.
Just like this Popiah stall. When I reached the bazaar at 3.45pm, there was already a long line waiting. It's the same condition every year. Sometimes if you reach there late, you are likely to go home empty-handed.
Festive is big business here.

Ahh..the glorious choices of Nasi Campur! :)
Nasi Campur literally means mixed rice. As rice is a staple here, each race will have their own variety of dishes that go well with rice.At Bazaar Ramadan, you are simply spoilt with choices. There are different types of curry, rendang, vegetables, fried chicken, seafood..and yes...even crabs! As rice itself is tasteless, the dishes that go with it will normally be rich with taste.

Time flies, the Ramadan season is here again. Going to the Ramadan Bazaar is a highlight for all Malaysians.
I always frequent this bazaar at Section 14 every Ramadan. This is a new stall I think.
That's a barbecued lamb you see in the picture. After the meat is cut, it is put on a grill pan to further enhance the taste with seasoning. This should be a nice dish to go with rice.

Mee Hoon Kueh

This is one of my favourite food. Not sure if it's a Hokkien dish, but I know only the Southern and Northern have this version. This version where the dough is torn into small little thin pieces into the soup. The version in KL - known more commonly as Pan Mee - has the dough knead into noodle-like strips.
It's real simple to cook. The secret however is in the dough. The kueh cannot be too thick or it will be hard to chew. It is cooked with soup boiled from anchovies. Customers can choose the soup or dried version.
This shop sells it like the way my mum cooks it at home. I especially like the fried anchovies and marinated meat which are served separately. If added to the soup directly, they will affect the clear sweet taste of the soup and they are likely to be softened. I normally dip the kueh into light soy sauce before eating. Tastes heavenly :)

Mid Autumn Festival

The festival of mooncakes and lanterns!
These are still traditional lanterns where they are made from bamboo and colored paper. There is a little metal stand for the candle to be lit. The lantern will be tied to a stick and children can carry them around. Normally the kids will walk around the neighbourhood in groups carrying these lanterns as part of the mid autumn festival celebration. The adults wll sit together enjoying tea and mooncake.
Nowadays there are battery operated ones made of plastic. Not as fun as it used to be though.

These were students from the nursing faculty of a local college. Seems like they were waiting for their chartered coach to come pick them up. The private college is new but attracting many students with their medical related courses. It must be affordable too.
The phone booth beside the bus stop was stuck with all the advertisement from money lenders. With the high penetration of mobile phone in this country, not many will use the phone booth.

When a driver 'misbehaves' at a parking lot, normally the punishment comes fast. This is the first time I am seeing this type of mobile clamps. The car was parked in the middle of the road. Therefore before the clamp is released, the little wheels on the clamps allow the car to be pushed somewhere else.
The fine is usually RM 50.

Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak literally means Fat Rice. Although it is high in calories, the dish is not cooked entirely out of fat. The rice is in fact cooked with coconut milk. Pandan leaves are added to give an added fragrance. The dark gravy beside the rice is what we call sambal. Some prefer extra hot sambal and some prefer it with a little sweet taste. Besides boiled egg, nasi lemak is eaten with fried anchovies and peanuts and slices of cucumber.
The photo was taken at a cafe where fried chicken and keropok is added as well. Nasi lemak is one of the top 5 favourite breakfast of Malaysians. If you happen to meet any Malaysians in your country, try asking them which home food they missed the most. I'll bet Nasi Lemak will come out top of the list.

Long Shot

Look at the left corner and you will see the head of a lady. She was 'watering' or spraying the plants from 1 level up. How much of the water that eventually reached the plants is a puzzle.
Guess it's either because she couldn't find a nearer water point or it was simply too hot to stand under the sun to water plants, that she resort to this.
I find it amusing watching her :)

The Shoe Doctor

This a mobile Klinik Kasut or Shoe Clinic. The 'doctor' sits patiently waiting for his 'patients' to arrive.
He works fast, to fix a broken heel, all he needs is 5 minutes and he only charges RM 3 for it. It's a one-man show.
Having your heels broke while you were walking or stepping on a nail is a modern hazard. While you are in these situations, it certainly helps when the friendly 'doctor' is near.

Cooks United

There are a few Shanghainese and Chinese restaurants that currently have such interesting 'window diplay'. Instead of showcasing the finished food or the menu, they present the stars behind the scene - the cooks.
I guess it's to showcase how clean the kitchen and utensils are and how skilful the chefs are. The chefs are normally seen making those delicate dim sums, chinese noodles or other pastries.
Looking at how these people work simply fascinates me. The details, the concentration that goes into every dumpling is mesmerising. These chefs, obviously used to the attention, do not turn an eye on the bystanders. They don't even smile when they look up occasionally. Well I guess when you are in a fish-tank kinda evironment, you just wanna finish your work and get out asap.

Outdoor Buffet

There is nothing more that can attract Malaysians, especially the Chinese, than buffets. Whether it's a RM 88++ per person buffet dinner at a 5star hotel or this RM 10 durian buffet.
Complaints about price increase in food, fuel hike are rampant currently. Some innovative entrepreneurs took the opportunity to combine value with public sentiments and ta-da...ALL YOU CAN EAT DURIAN BUFFET!!!
Durians is one of the unique fruits in our country. It is an acquired taste. They have always come in grades, as usual the higher the grade, the more expensive it is. Prices range from RM3 - above RM 18 per kg. Patrons of this buffet probably realise that with the different grades, they probably won't get the best ones by just paying RM 10.. but what the heck..RM 10 for buffet is quite irresistable. Besides, you don't have to take the trouble to open the fruit and throw away the shells later on.
There are tonnes of Malaysians who are willing to take the trouble and pay a high price to savour good food. Therefore there are some durian-lovers who organised trips to orchards to enjoy the best durians. The last I heard, one such visitor paid RM150++ for this.
Phew..how much are you willing to pay for fruits?

Eating on my own

Eating on your own is one of the first few journeys one takes towards independence.
Once I can eat on my own, haha, watch out Ma, there are a couple of items on the menu which I hope to discuss with you.
For instance, I like soupy stuff - splishing and splashing out of the bath tub is quite fun, I discovered.
I also like cute little colorful stuff - bits, M&Ms, jelly beans, boy are they fun to play with on the table as well.
And Ma, lastly, if I can eat on my own, it means I am in charge now. No more feeding, no more 'open your mouth, sweetie, and eat this for mummy'. I will choose what I want to eat.

Green Lung

A nice pond within office buildings. It's soothing to look at, especially from the top. There are japanese carps swimming in the pond. Believe this is maintained by the building management.
Not many of the office workers drop by to relax, probably due to the hot weather and the lack of chairs or benches.
Maybe the purpose of having this feature is to enhance Feng Shui rather than recreational. According to Feng Shui, water is wealth. By pooling the water, I guess the purpose is to accumulate wealth.
Have you done any changes to your home with accordance to Feng Shui?

Congestion

This is an area close to PJ. It amazes me the number of cars and houses one can see from here. With almost every working citizen having their own car, we can't blame traffic for becoming slow. What about houses, after we encroach every piece of land, we move uphill, if there is not enough still, we move up to build higher buildings.
I wish I could tell our children of the future that they would grow up in a beautiful environment where they could get all the green fields, trees, flowers and fresh water and air they liked. Sadly it's impossible.

What do you call these wire structures? Electric towers? I thought they look like nice wire sculptures. The colors of the evening sky adds a little variety to the composition.
Some say that living close to these is harmful since there is some level of radiation or whatever dangerous elements they call it. I know if King Kong chose these instead of the high rise building, he probably wouldn't manage to get to the top without being fried first. LOL.

There are no limits when it comes to jewelleries, fashion and shoes to women. The universal mystery to men is why do women buy the same design of things only to be told : But they are in different colors, honey!
LOL.
And yet we often say men are visual-driven animals, if women don't always come up with different things for men to look at, they are bound to get bored. At least this is what some women are telling me.
Whether it's to attract the opposite or to mix the new bag you bought, I believe colors bring out the excitement and fun in you. Having said that, you don't have to dress like a rainbow to be happy. Guess a little change will do the trick.

Fruits

The mixed fruits sold n this shop are more pricey that those of street vendors. However the variety wins hands down. There are the usual watermelon, papaya, guava, pineapple, mango..and some different variants of the same kind i.e green kiwi and golden kiwi, red dragon fruit and white dragon fruit. Other fruits which you normally don't find it in normal street stalls are apples, grapes, and buah delima - which is pomegranate. All the fruits are cut and packed. Even the pomegranate are painstakingly removed bit by bit from the hard crust.
Convenience sells.

Empty Parking

Getting a parking space is another problem faced by drivers beside traffic jam. When it comes to shopping malls during the weekends, it is not usual to spend 10 minutes just going round and round waiting for someone to vacant the space.
This parking lot is empty only during weekends. Or when there is a major traffic jam somewhere.
Public transport is not a favourite option. I hope public transport especially subways will improve soon. We can travel faster, without traffic jam, no pollution and the fuel hike won't affect us that much.

Old School Hair Styles

Continuation from yesterday's entry. This poster was hung on the wall of the old barber shop. I don't think the customers use this for selection or instructions to the barber.
This however taught me on the names of the various hairstyles for gentlement. Before this, the only name of style I know was only crew cut. :)

Old School Hair Style

Barber shops like this are getting lesser as stylish and modern hair saloons mushroom around the city.
Customers who frequent this shop are mainly looking for a hair cut. Nothing flashy, nothing fashion-y, just make my shorter. Period.
The price is at RM10 per hair cut. With RM 5 more, you get shaving. The barber normally ends their routine by giving pats on the customer's shoulder and a twist on their neck. I am always afraid to see they way they twist people's head, for fear that the head will end up rolling on the ground.
Besides all these no-nonsense regular, there are mums who bring their boys over for a hair cut. I can imagine one mother telling the son : "Well, when you are old enough to earn a living, you can choose where you want your hair done. While you are still in school, you should look like a student."
Lol..I guess trendier hairstyles for these young boys are perhaps something to look forward to.

Assam Laksa

Laksa is a common food here..there are variation according to the different states. There are Sarawak Laksa, Johor Laksa and the most popular Penang Laksa or commonly known as Assam Laksa.
Laksa in general is spicy soup with noodle or meehoon (vermicelli). Different ingredients are added according to different states. For assam laksa, pineapple, mint leaves, onions and fish is added. And of course not forgetting the most important prawn paste which add to the sweetness of the soup.
They say the best assam laksa can only be found in Penang. The price is cheaper over there as well.

Pig-Intestine-Noodle

Another foodie weekend. This is called Chee-Cheong-Fun. Literally it means pig intestine noodles :)
Guess the name came from the shape of the it that is similar to pig's intestines - long, white and circular.
I think it's made up of rice powder and flour. The noodle is steam before serving with sweet sauce and chilli. Spring onions and fried shallots are added as garnishing.
At my hometown down south, the sauce is sweet and thick. However I realise in Klang Valley, they have subsitute it with the Penang version - the sweet prawn paste. Well I still prefer the taste I grew up with.
Chee-Cheong-Fun is normally eaten in the morning. You can find them in most dim sum shops which are crowded during the weekend mornings. Another variation will be putting in prawns or char-siew (roast pork) in between the layers of noodles.
Oh..ya.. another variation is eating with the ingredients of yeong-tau-foo. Yeong-tau-foo is made up of bitter gourd, lady's finger, chili which are stuffed with fish paste.
Like I always said, remember to try this when you are in Malaysia ya.

Every meal is important to Malaysians. In fact, when 3 meals are not enough, we create other opportunities or occasions to eat : morning tea, brunch, afternoon tea, supper etc..
This is a cafe selling Malay food. It was taken during breakfast time. All races, all walks of life frequent here.
I love the lontong here. The nasi lemak is the most popular dish in the cafe.
Food in Malaysia, is always a 24 hour affair.

Not sure if this is a real-life wedding poster. But the whole bus stop is covered with pictures of this couple. Maybe they sponsored it. Or the owner of the bustop persuaded them to feature their photo to attract attention. This will maybe lead to pulling in advertisers.
Proposals and weddings have somemore become more public in the Klang Valley. We have billboards featuring a real proposal and real wedding announcement. Malaysians are becoming more open?

Horizontally Challenged

This is the last of the sculpture pictures taken at Urbanscapes. It's amazing how the artist made the Jenga blocks all sticking together nicely without any support from below. There must be some physics or balancing science in this. Playing Jenga is difficult sometimes, imagine having to lift 1 block out of this structure without the whole thing tumbling down.
Some artists are scientists too..don't you think?

Polystrene Robot

This is another structure exhibited at Urbanscapes. The robot is made entirely out of polystrene boxes, the ones used for packed food. There are strings for visitors to pull to animate the robot.

Ultra Stuck

I like the interesting idea of the powerful Ultraman actually being stuck, held by strings. Suddenly the once SuperHero becomes a puppet. Not sure what was in the artist mind when this was created. Probably to show all humans, even SuperHumans have their limits? :)

Big Guy in Town

Took this during a movie carnival in the shoppping mall. We are used to seeing T-Rex, I think more people were attracted to Wall-E :)
Watching movies is one the favourite pastime here, especially for young people. KungFu Panda which was aired recently had very good response from people of all ages.

This fashion outlet extended a very warm welcome to customers of all nationalities.
Tourism has always been one of the important industries in our country. I would say most of the people here are quite friendly to tourists. With English and Mandarin being two of the more popular languages, tourists would have little communication problems here.
Try Malaysia as your next destination. We may not be in the list of places to see before you die, but if you have never set foot here, you maybe missing a great deal of interesting things and people :)

Lo Bak - That is the name of all these snacks, collectively. Most of them are fried stuff. You choose a few items, coupled with century egg and cut cucumbers, you will have a nice snack for after dinner.
The black item you see there is century egg. It is actually one kinda seasoned duck egg. Need an acquired taste for it.
I have seen it become one of the challenging items in Fear Factor. They called it the 100-year old egg. Nahhh...the name 'century' doesn't mean it has been around that long :)

Found this pet shop in SS2. Most of the pet shops I know occupy the ground floor or are single story buildings. This is a special one I found situated on the 1st floor. Found this stall at Kelana Jaya, near the old Giant. There were a row of stalls selling snacks on a weekend afternoon.
Putu piring is one of the kuehs you can find in Malay night markets or markets. I am not very sure on the ingredients. It looks like rice powder or flour, mixed with 'gula melaka' or thick brown sugar. After they steam in the round containers, they become the soft white puffs you see above. Topped with coconut crubs, when you bite into it, you can taste the sweetness of the brown sugar.
As usual on all my posts on food...cool and yummy huh :)

Crispy Snacks

This is one of the stalls in front of the old Giant outlet in Kelana Jaya. Most of the stalls are selling snacks for those who want a quick bite or tea on a lazy Saturday afternoon.
This stall has a variety of homemade potato chips, peas, and other fried snacks.
The yellow peas you see in a big pile here is called Kacang Kuda in Malay. Not sure what it's called in English. The peas are steamed. I think.

Installing air condition in a tropical country like Malaysia is like having a heater in Finland. They just exist without a question. You can always hear the usual comment : Why so hot, no air-con ah?
:) Putting aside the funny way how Malaysians converse in our very own Malaysian English, air conditioning has already become something we take for granted. It is almost like fixing curtains in the house.
They are not earth friendly however. It's irony that our solution to adjusting to the hot climate actually pose more problems to the overall environment.
We win some and lose some, and this case, we are probably going to lose a lot more.

This stall at SS2 Night Market is very popular. And they only sell fried chicken nuggets and chicken chops.
Nicely marinated pieces of boneless chicken is fried and sold piping hot. They are crispy and smell really good. If you like your fried chicken spicy, they will sprinkle chilli powder on it.
1 packet is sold at RM 4.
There is always a long queue in front of the stall. Business is good.
The F&B business is definitely very lucrative. Something as simple as fried chicken can make someone a millionaire soon.

Banana Leaf Rice

If you are a regular at Indian restaurants, you will be familar with banana leaf rice.
Instead of bowls or plates, the rice is served on banana leaves. It is eaten together with vegetables and other cooked dishes. You also get to choose if you want fish, chicken curry or dhal to go with it.
Besides having a variety of cooked dishes like sambal prawn, beef rendang, most Indian restaurants have raw seafood and meat that they will fry for consumers on the spot.
Eating banana leaf rice is a happy experience. You'll need to try to know it :)

Craze for Ice Cream

On every 31st of the month, Baskin Robbins will have a 31% on their handpacked ice cream. Normally that's when their outlets will be really full.
This was taken at their outlet in Damansara Uptown. Apologies for the quality of the picture. Couldn't get a good shot as I was always being pushed around by the crowd.
I went at around 8pm and boy, was I greeted by a big but patient - most are ok to wait at the tables outside - crowd. The customers had to take numbers before they got to place their orders. And with BR's style of letting the customers try as many flavours as they want, the queue just kept getting longer.
I walked out with my purchase after close to an hour. Imagine waiting that long just to buy a box of ice cream! Well..like all my fellow countrymen, I can't resist a good bargain, sometimes :)

Found this cute stencil on the wall on the streets. Can't see the expressions of these characters, but guess the body language denotes some kinda cheerful spirit.
I don't mind if the streets are filled with street art if it lifts up the spirit of the pedestrians.
Fuel prices has gone up again, one thing for sure, the other main occupants of the road - the drivers - will not be happy for some time.

Lego having their roadshow at one of the malls. Many of us grow up playing Lego. I love playing them, but most of my constructions are all 'abstract masterpieces'. :P Can't really build those nice houses, ships, animals shown at the Lego boxes. Still lego is fun and educational.

Durians - For Bundawah

Durian stall at night market. They were selling 3-4 packets for RM 10. There were around 2-3 seeds per packet. Of course there are better quality ones where they charge RM 10 per kilo.
Durian used to be a seasonal fruit but I see them very often nowadays.
Loving durian is an acquired taste. It's quite common that the foreigners who visit Malaysia find the fruit a bit 'overwhelming'. As easily as it can be found in Malaysia, there are still some local people I know who simply can't stand the smell of durian.
Haa but durian is not my favourite fruit. I would post some of it soon. :)

Spotted this lil fella in SS2. We don't bring dogs everywhere the way the westerners do. When I was in Europe, I was surprised to see them bringing their dogs into subways.
Having said that, there are still some dog owners here who are seen at restaurants, supermarkets with their little furry friends. I have also heard stories that some dogs enjoy more luxuries than the average working class people. Wonder when the 1st millionaire dog is going to appear here. :)

Homegrown Vitamins

Ahh..the glorious fruits of Malaysia. Bananas, mangosteens, papayas, mangoes... They come in all shapes, colors and textures. And not forgetting the king of fruits - Durians.
I remember learning in school that local fruits are rich in vitamins and cheap compared to imported fruits. Eating local fruits has something connected to patriotism, at least for me. As a food lover, nothing beats doing something you are passionate about and feeling you are doing something good for the country as well.

Claypot Chicken Rice

Both the Chinese and Malay have their own version of Chicken Rice here. Besides the traditional one served on a plate, the Chinese has another version of chicken rice, served in piping hot claypot.
The chicken, normally marinated with special sauce is cook together with the rice in the claypot. Other ingredients include salted fish, spring onions and dried pork sausages. You get to taste the rice which has acquired the fragrance of the ingredients.
Another must-try if you are around the area. As usual :)

Meditation

Spotted this lady meditating at a temple. There were much hustle and bustle around but she remained still and cool. Probably chanting some mantra in her head to keep the distractions as bay.
I have not tried meditation but think it will be an uphill task for a person who can't sit still for long. Like yours truly.

Cut Fruits

These mobile fruit stalls are pretty common, especially in working districts and eateries. Fruits sold are mostly papayas, watermelons, pineapples, guavas, honeydews and mangoes.
A year ago, a piece was priced at RM 1, but now the price has increased to RM 1.2o.
The plastic bottles at the front contain...er...I don't know the exact name, but we know it as sour plum powder. Adds a little sour sweet taste to the fruits, normally only goes with guavas.
The working crowd find this a convenient way of getting the vitamins they need. Most people are too lazy or doesn't have the time to bring cut fruits from home.
The word - Rojak - you see at the top of the van, is actually a local version of salad. Sometimes it's made up of purely fruits, sometimes it's just veggies. The dressing is sweet prawn paste and sugar.

Kuih Muih

These are sweet kuihs.

The white rectangular kuih is yamcake. The other 2 kuihs on the left are sweet. The brown mixture on a little white tray is kaya - our version of jam (made from eggs and sugar)

When Malaysians are abroad, the thing they miss most is the food. A good part of being a multi racial country is that variety is the middle name of Malaysian food. Judging from the types of kuih (the malay word for cakes) above, you will definitely be spoilt for choice.
You feel like having a light snack, well would you like it to be savoury or sweet?
Ok, you like sweet stuff, would you like it with coconut? kaya? multi-layered?
The list just goes on. :)
Most of the kuih are nyonya kuih. Nyonya or the Peranakan Chinese is yet another unique ethnic group in our country.
Well, that's another story.
When you come to Malaysia, remember to savour as many cuisine as you or your tummy possibly can :)

Long Tails

I was in Krabi for a short trip. These are long tail boats used to ferry passengers from the mainland to the islands or bays. Although it's one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in Thailand, Krabi is not as commercialised as Koh Samui or Phuket. Not yet.
Although my trip was slightly affected by the weather, it was still fun and interesting. Ever tried jungle trekking on an elephant? Ever had lunch on a deserted island with fine sand and turquoise waters? Try Krabi for your next holiday. If you are open for something new, this should be a cool experience for you :)

Char Siew Pao

Have you ever been to a chinese dim sum restaurant? If you have, then you must be familiar with one of the most popular dim sum - Char Siew Pao. It's my favourite.
Char Siew is supposed to be roasted pork. Pau means bun. Therefore Char Siew Pao literally means roasted pork bun. After they are made, they must be steamed before they can be eaten.
I like it best when I slice the bun into two and the sweet aroma escapes from the bun.... Yummmmyy..
Besides pork there are other types of buns which look rather similar besides the fillings. The lotus seed bun is its sweeter cousin.
Head down for dim sum this weekend. Coupled with hot chinese tea, these buns are simply heavenly. :)

Staircase to Nowhere

Whoever built this staircase certainly didn't see eye to eye with the building management :P The entrance which led to the staircase was actually sealed. They opened another entrance in front but couldn't get rid of the old staircase. So here it remains until someone thinks of a better way to make use of it.
I am sure all of us have seen abandoned houses, bridges, buildings, but abandoned staircase? That's new for me.

This was taken from the a hotel in KL. This is overlooking the area beside KL Sentral Monorail Station. We are fast builders here, now and then a piece of land disappears and you see a condominium there. Most of the workforce in construction are made up of foreign labour.
I feel sad that a major part of where I stay are built by people who are from other countries. I sympathise the plight of foreign workers here. Some are really abused by their employers. Unfortunately as locals shun from the being construction workers, this condition will continue.

All the King's Horses

A Hindu temple. I don't know the god / goddess that was within the chariot. Hindu temples are fascinating. They have hundreds of sculptures on a single building. All comes in different details and colors. I heard for some temple the craftsmen were actually brought from IndiaYou have to see one to be amazed by it. I was told the religion itself is full of fascinating stories of gods, goddesses, demons and spirits.
The dried grass / hay at the back is used to cover up areas which are currently are under construction.

Weekend Market

One of the shopping malls have a huge walkway for weekend markets. Different booths are set up by independent proprietors. Most of the products are clothings, assessories and toys. More for the womenfolk and children. The prices are not exactly rock bottom but cheaper compared to the outlets in the mall and varieties are abundance.
People who enjoy retail therapy will enjoy the convenience of getting what they want without the hassle of walking from shop to shop. Just take a stroll and feast your eyes on the things you fancy.

Earth-Friendly Burger

There was a mini roadshow during world earth day earlier on. Among the many booths promoting earth-friendly products, there was one that sold what I called - Baby Green Burgers. The size of the burger is smaller than what we get at fast food joints, but more nutritious and earth-friendly.
Global warming is not a new thing to locals, however many still do not practise or do their part to save the earth. Hopefully with these roadshows, people will start to realise, even if it's just reducing the number of plastics in your home, when everyone does it, we can make a change.

PJ, unlike other cities of the world, is not really a pedestrian friendly place. Most of the PJ residents travel by car, but sadly most of the traffic are made up of single occupant per car. Car pool is not a convenience option to many, despite it being fuel saving.

Therefore PJ does not really have many of nice, trees-lining walkway - most people don't walk much anyway.

I dream of having more walkways like these in future, because I walk a lot.
